Since the inauguration of Pingtan Pilot Free Trade Zone, the island has gained momentum in its cross-border e-commerce industry by leveraging its unique geographical advantages, opening a new spectrum of cooperation with the outside world. Pingtan is the closest place on the mainland to the island of Taiwan and a special zone for piloting cross-Straits integration.
On October 19, reporters from Pingtan CMC visited the bonded warehouse of Pingtan. The workers were busy preparing for the incoming “Double Eleven” - China’s largest shopping spree. It’s estimated to handle 800,000 orders during the shopping festival, according to a worker from the warehouse.
Thanks to its early start and excellent policies, Pingtan’s cross-border e-commerce industry is thriving. In 2015, Pingtan took the lead in piloting business such as cross-border e-commerce bonded import, general export, and overseas direct delivery and simultaneously constructed the cross-border e-commerce industrial park. In 2021, Pingtan’s cross-border e-commerce bonded import volume ranked first in Fujian province while its Taiwan-bounded B2C transaction came in first on the mainland.
The impressive momentum has lured more merchants to enter the bonded warehouse of Pingtan. In response, Fujian KJT Cross-Border E-Commerce Co., Ltd., the warehouse operator, has set up an operation center to provide a full-chain service for them. The company’s business volume has seen an annual increase of 40%.
“We have realized nationwide delivery from our warehouse,” said Lin Fangfang, deputy manager of the operation center of Fujian KJT Cross-border E-commerce Co., Ltd.
The booming business is inseparable from well-developed logistics. Pingtan Port has connected with major ports in northern, central, and southern Taiwan by cross-Straits freighters.
“Commodities like cosmetics from Japan and South Korea are airlifted to Taipei Airport, and then we shipped them to Pingtan. It’s normal to combine air-sea transportation,” said Peng Yu, deputy general manager of Fujian Youhaohuo Supply Chain Management Co., Ltd. Peng added that the company’s cross-border e-commerce bonded imports exceeded 10.5 million orders in the first half of this year.
Data show that from January to September this year, there were 23,072,300 orders delivered in cross-border e-commerce bonded imports, surging 45 % year-on-year. The value of the goods was about 2.279 billion yuan, up 43 % year-on-year; there were 6.138 million orders of cross-border e-commerce direct purchase exports, hiking 22% from a year earlier and amounting to 5.231 billion yuan.
