The 12th Cross-Straits Quyi Festival has been held recently in Pingtan, the closest place on the mainland to the island of Taiwan, where hand gesture dance One Thousand Character Primer, an ancient Chinese classic, made waves.

According to choreographer Zeng Jie, the dance produces the chemistry between tradition and current trend. Children put on Hanfu to better carry forward the excellent traditional Chinese culture.

The 10-year-old Lin Yixuan, a lead dancer said she was impressed with the performance. She was excited because she met many quyi professionals and made friends while learning the dance.

The young performers are from Shangpan Minischool, the first educational platform in rural Pingtan for public benefit. It aims to enrich the extracurricular life of rural left-behind children and achieve equalization of education. “Next, we will continue to create more hand gesture dances based on poetry and classical stories,” said Lin Haiping, founder of Shangpan Minischool.
